Top 5 tips to take better photos

Hey Everyone!

Over the past few months I have spent a lot of time researching and experimenting with camera settings to improve my photography, for both personal reasons and for my little blog. I thought it might be interesting to share over a few different posts some tips and tricks for anyone to read, as there are so many beautiful blogs out there and not many blogs that explain how to achieve the look.

1) Light

Be sure to take your photos in a bright place! No one wants to see dark, dull, fuzzy photos, pick a room with big windows, add a white surface, perhaps a lamp. Try to take photos in the middle of the day when the sun is at its brightest.

2) Colour

Add some colour to your photos. It can be easy to fall into the habit of photographing a plain product on a white surface, but to spice up the picture why not add a vase of flowers, or some petals/leaves? Or a candle burning in the background.

3) Contrast

Try to avoid taking pictures of dark things on a dark surface, and light on a light tabletop. It can make it a lot more striking, and easy to see if you take the same photo of the same object and change the backdrop.

4) Composition

Instead of just a plain straight on shot on a white table, or sitting so your shoulders and head are positioned in a traditional way, try adding angle, height, put your subject beside something else, take an action shot, there are so many ways to change the traditional photo.

5) Location

This is especially important if you are trying to sell an idea. Sharing photos of a magnificent beach holiday? Don't take pictures in your hotel room. If it is an autumnal look book, go outside into the falling leaves and cool weather, don't just stay indoors in front of a white wall.

These are some of the things I have noticed over the past few months browsing through blogs, and researching about photography. I may in the future add some more technical posts for those camera geeks out there...
